Race your horse to victory by answering quick-fire questions on your tablet to move your horse to the finish line as fast as possible.
The event consists of three races of up to six horses, allowing for up to six teams of three people to compete against each other. The table in the background displays the live results of the races. If, after the third race, there is a tie, then the winning horses will have one last race to determine the winner.
There are two sites you need:
Launch the Race Track site first to create a login. Simply enter any Race ID and Password to create the account. If the ID you have chosen does not exist, it will be created with the password you have entered. If the ID already exists, then the password has to be correct. There is no important data being recorded - the password is only there to prevent another party from accidentally using your ID, so any ID and any Password of any length can be used.
You can change your password whilst logging in by including the new password in the 'Change Password' field which should otherwise be left blank. If you forget your password, there is no way to retrieve it - simply create another ID.
Once you have your ID and Password you can give it to your Jockeys as they'll need to enter it on their tablets to join the race.
Select the number of horses you want by clicking/tapping on the '+' and '-' buttons and click/tap on 'OK' to start.
Every aspect of the race will now be handled automatically. The only manual intervention required is to click/tap on the 'Ready' button before each race once all the Jockeys are ready. At the very end of the race, click/tap on the winners cup to reset everything. You can also reset the whole process at any time if necessary by clicking/tapping on the chequered finish line.
The first thing to do on launching the Jockey app is to enter the same Race ID and Password that was used/created on the Race Track site. The app will then wait until the number of horses has been confirmed on the Race Track site before giving the Jockey the option to choose their horse. The organiser should ensure that each Jockey chooses a different horse and only one tablet per horse.
Once a horse is chosen, the app will present the Jockey with a big 'Go' button which should not be tapped until the race starts. There is also a button to toggle the language between English and Spanish.
Once all the Jockeys are ready, the organiser should tap on the 'Ready' button on the Race Track site which will bring up a set of traffic lights. The race stars when the lights turn green.
The Jockeys will then be presented with quick-fire questions which they answer by tapping on one of the four coloured buttons at the bottom of the screen.
Note that the app has been designed for portrait mode. The questions will not all be visible in landscape mode (and everything will look distorted), and a warning will pop up asking you to turn the tablet back to portrait mode if you are in landscape mode.
Make sure the Jockeys are aware of these rules.
Note that the Race Track updates the horse positions a few times per second which means that it will be normal to see horses move at the same time when the Jockey responses are within a few milliseconds of each other. However, the server receives the responses from the Jockeys in real time, so even though two horses may be seen to cross the finish line at the same time, the server knows which one came first. It's the server, not the Race Track site/app, that marks the order in which they cross the line, so the order, and the winner, will be correct.
It's best to open the site/apps in full screen mode, especially the Jockey apps as otherwise you risk scrolling the page when trying to tap on the answer. On a PC this is usually done by hitting 'F11', and on a Mac by clicking on the small green 'Full Screen' circle at the very top left of the window. There is usually no option for full screen on mobile devices, but it can still be achieved by saving the page to your home screen (on iOS devices) or choosing to install it (on Android devices) and then launching it directly from your home screen or apps drawer.
The Race Track and Jockey sites/apps, on launching, will read the current state of the race and resume from there, so should a site/app hang or crash, you can reload the page and it will recover from where you left off. You'll have to log in first, so make sure you have your ID and Password to hand. If you want to reset everything for any reason, click/tap on the chequered finish line in the Race Track site and then refresh the Jockey apps if necessary.
If any of the devices loses connectivity for whatever reason, a pop-up window will appear warning you of the fact. If you are able to quickly resolve the issue you can tap on 'OK' and the site/app will resume. During the quick-fire questions, the app will not stop and will continue attempting to post the answers. The green WiFi symbol at the top left of the screen will turn red to warn you that it has lost connectivity. A pop-up box will appear at the end of the race if connectivity has not been resumed by then.
